The Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) does not typically end at age 65. For most recipients, they will transition to the Old Age Security (OAS), the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and the Guaranteed Annual Income System (GAINS); And because income from these sources is typically greater than ODSP benefits, clients are therefore ineligible for continued financial supports under ODSP.
Example: In 2026, the maximum ODSP for a single person with no dependants is $1,436 per month as of July 2026. OAS is $751.97 for seniors aged 65 to 74 and $827.17 for those 75 and older. In addition, the maximum GIS supplement is $1,123.17 (depending on income), and the GAINS maximum payment is $92 per month (also dependent on income). Because this unearned income from other sources is subtracted dollar for dollar from the ODSP cheque, the client therefore becomes ineligible for continued ODSP payments.
What happens to medical and dental coverage at age 65?
On the first day of the month after the client turns 65 years of age, they are automatically enrolled into the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program for seniors. For low income seniors, they can apply for the Ontario Seniors Co-Payment Program which eliminates the $100 deductible and reduces their co-pay to just $2.00.
For dental coverage, the client must apply for the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program (OSDCP). Eligible candidates have a net income of $25,000 or less for singles, or $41,500 or less for couples. Secondly, the new Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is available to seniors under $70,000 for singles or $90,000 for couples, and provides more comprehensive coverage than the provincial senior program.
What about benefits for hearing, vision and medical supplies?
Benefits like hearing care, vision care and medical supplies such as surgical dressings and diabetic supplies are part of the ODSP health benefits package. Depending on income, ODSP clients 65 years of age and older may be able to qualify for ODSPs extended health benefit which allows them to retain their coverage even though they no longer qualify financially for monthly support payments.
